The 23-year-old scored a treble against Newcastle United on Saturday, making a strong case for an improved deal at the Emirates, and his French boss believes it is just a matter of time before the ongoing contract talks are resolved.

"He belongs here. I want it resolved with the same intensity. I think he loves the club and the club loves him," Wenger told reporters following the 7-3 thrashing of the Magpies.

The 63-year-old boss also spoke of Walcott's desire to play as a central striker. We cannot ask much more than three goals and the performance he gave today," he added.

"I said I'm convinced that he can play in there - he has qualities - and he can only improve the more he plays there.

"He can play in the other position on the left, right or through the middle and it is good because Giroud is basically a centre-forward only so I can play the two together."

The winger kicked things off with a fine strike, cutting in from the left to slot the ball past Tim Krul, somewhat reminiscent of a former number-14 Gunner.

"That was a Thierry Henry-type goal," the Frenchman added. "He has done very well, it typifies what I think he can do. He can play through the middle, he will only get stronger.

"He is a good finisher, he has learned a lot because he is an intelligent player. He will continue to improve."
