Sir Alex Ferguson decided to make a number of changes to his side from the Boxing Day win against Newcastle but it didn't seem to affect his players and after a strong start.

The Premier League leaders went ahead after nine minutes as Gareth McAuley scored an own goal following good work from Ashley Young.

The Red Devils continued to push forward and almost doubled their lead through Michael Carrick, but the midfielder's effort was brilliantly cleared off the line by Gabriel Tamas and, despite a number of other chances, they failed to find the net again before the interval.

However, whatever Steve Clarke said at the break seemed to have inspired the visitors, and it was the Baggies who had the better of the second 45 minutes and could have equalised on 53 minutes, but Tamas failed to direct his free header at the back post goalwards.

The Black Country side continued to push forward, looking extremely dangerous, especially on set-pieces and McAuley almost made amends for his first half error as he crashed a header against the bar.

However, they couldn't find that all important goal and were eventually punished in stoppage time as substitute Robin van Persie drilled a left-footed shot home from the edge of the area to notch up his 17th of the season.

The victory sees United maintain their seven point lead at the top, while West Brom will be thinking what might have been after another excellent display.
