The Red Devils had to come from behind three times during the Boxing Day clash, but stole all three points in injury time.

The result extended United's lead at the top of the Premier League standings to seven points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, who lost 1-0 to Sunderland.

With Wayne Rooney having damaged his knee ligament in training prior to the match, Hernandez was awarded a rare start, and with the England striker expected to be sidelined for up to three weeks, 'Chicharito' will undoubtedly be afforded more opportunities to prove his worth.

The Mexico ace has a penchant for scoring late in games, with his goal against the Magpies his fourth such winner in two months.

Despite making only four starts this term, Hernandez remains happy to fight for his place in the United team.

"Ask any player in the world and they will tell you they want to play every game. But the competition here is incredible," he told Sky Sports.

"It is the biggest club in the world. You need to be aware there are five strikers who want to be part of the games. I have to prove, in one minute or 90, that I want to start."

The 24-year-old now has 10 goals in all competitions, although he did let two gilt-edged chances go a-begging on Wednesday.

He said: "You cannot afford to regret every chance you miss because if you do you will never be concentrated for the next opportunity.

"You are never going to play the perfect game. You will never score five goals from five opportunities. That is the beauty of football."
