The Reds led after just two minutes but the Potters hit back quickly and took control of the game.

Luis Suarez burst in behind the home defence in the opening minute and Ryan Shawcross hauled him down inside the box to gift the merseysiders an early penalty.

Steven Gerrard duly dispatched from 12 yards, sending Asmir Begovic the wrong way.

Three minutes later, Walters took advantage of a slip from Martin Skrtel to confidently find the top corner with a composed finish.

On 12 minutes, Kenwyne Jones headed Stoke into the lead. Michael Kightly's corner found the striker unmarked at the near post and Jones headed powerfully into the corner.

Four minutes after the restart, Tony Pulis' side were two goals ahead. A long throw broke to Walters, who chested down well before steering a volley into the top corner. Pepe Reina got a hand to it but couldn't keep it out.

Brendan Rodgers' charges failed to create any good chances to get themselves back into the game and Stoke saw out the second half with ease.
