The 27-year-old striker was a surprise omission from Sir Alex Ferguson's starting XI at Old Trafford on Wednesday afternoon as Javier Hernandez partnered Robin van Persie in attack against the Magpies.

However, Ferguson has revealed that Rooney tore the ligaments in his knee during training, which was the reason for his absence on match day.

The Red Devils boss expects the England international to be sidelined for around three weeks, meaning he is set to miss games against West Brom, Wigan, West Ham and possibly Liverpool.

Fergie told MUTV: "Wayne had a volley yesterday towards the end of training and he's torn the ligament in the back of his knee.

"He could be out for two or three weeks which is unfortunate because I thought after his performance on Sunday he could be brilliant, you know you don't have two performances like Wayne did on Sunday. He was desperate to play and unfortunately couldn't risk him."

Rooney joins Ashley Young, Phil Jones and Danny Welbeck on the treatment table after the trio also sat out the encounter with Alan Pardew's side.

Ferguson added: "Danny Welbeck took ill in the team hotel yesterday [Tuesday] and Ashley Young got injured in training also. Phil Jones got his injury last week against Swansea."
