The away side dominated the first-half and Vincent Kompany hit the woodwork from a corner, while David Silva and Yaya Toure forced good saves from Simon Mignolet.

Sunderland had their chances as well though, Steven Fletcher denied by a fine save from City keeper Joe Hart.

The hosts took a surprise lead on 53 minutes through former City man Johnson, who curled a left-footed shot from distance and, although Hart got a hand to it, the ball slipped off his glove and into the net.

The reigning champions continued to press for an equaliser but Sunderland stood firm and largely restricted their opponents to half-chances.

Simon Mignolet in the Sunderland goal did well to twice deny Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko, while Stephane Sessegnon and Frazier Campbell could have doubled the home side's lead had it not been for some good work from Hart.
