The Saints started the game outside the drop zone and made the worst possible start when Ashkan Dejagah's cross was parried by Kelvin Davis straight into the path of the waiting Dimitar Berbatov who turned the ball home from six yards after just eight minutes.

On a rain soaked afternoon in South-West London both sides struggled to keep possession and chances were at a premium as both keepers found themselves underworked.

After the break though the Saints came out with renewed vigour and Jason Puncheon immediately hit a stinging drive that whistled just past the angle of post and bar.

As the half wore on the hosts continued to find themselves on the back foot and Rickie Lambert almost levelled on the hour mark with a half volley that flashed over the bar.

However, just as Fulham thought they had weathered the storm, Chris Baird stuck out a stray hand to block a Lambert shot and the referee pointed to the spot.

Lambert grabbed the ball and made no mistake from twelve yards, despite the best attempts of Mark Schwarzer.

In the dying embers there were chances for Berbatov and substitute Jay Rodriguez as both sides looked for a dramatic winner.
