The first half produced few chances, the torrential rain contributing to a rather dire encounter which was punctuated by the awarding of many free kicks.

This changed in the second half as Osman broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute, with his shot deflecting off the arm of Gary Caldwell. This wrong-footed Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi, allowing the ball to nestle in the back of the net.

Everton captain Phil Neville, who was playing his 500th Premier League game this afternoon, provided the cross for Jagielka to head home the Toffees' second from six yards out.

With 13 minutes remaining, this looked to have sealed the win, but Everton fans were given a scare eight minutes from time when some woeful defending allowed Arouna Kone to steal in and score.

The goal proved only to be a consolation though as, despite their best efforts, the Latics could not force an equaliser.

The result sees David Moyes' men stretch their unbeaten run to seven Premier League games as they moved up to fourth place in the table in the process.

Meanwhile, the defeat for Wigan sees them remaining in the relegation places, one point shy of safety.
