The Spain international has become the Blues' first-choice striker following the departure of Didier Drogba at the end of last season, with the £50million striker stepping up to the plate with six goals in his last five matches.

However, with Daniel Sturridge reportedly on the verge of joining Liverpool, Benitez admits he will need to delve into the transfer market in order to strengthen his options up front.

"(Torres) knows that we need this competition, we know that we need this competition," said Benitez ahead of Sunday's clash against Aston Villa.

"The problem in January always is, 'Which one?'. Which player is available, which player is good enough to be here in a top side?

"So, it's not easy, but I think it will be positive for everyone.

"And Fernando is ready to fight for his position. He has no problem because he has a lot of confidence and he is enjoying now his football."

The Blues kick-off this weekend's encounter in seventh, one point behind a four-way tie for third, although with two games in hand following their inclusion in the Club World Cup last week.
