Rodgers: U-turn?

Stewart Downing appears to have done enough to convince Brendan Rodgers he has a future at Liverpool after starring in the 4-0 win over Fulham on Saturday.

The England international scored his first Premier League goal for the Reds after having earlier set up Steven Gerrard for the Reds' second of the afternoon as Martin Skrtel and Luis Suarez also got in on the action either side of those two strikes.

Downing's performance could not have come at a better time for the midfielder, who only last week revealed he had been told by the boss he was free to leave in January.

However, Rodgers now appears to have made a U-turn on that decision, with the Ulsterman now claiming the midfielder's future on Merseyside still has plenty of promise.

He said: "Stewart's been brilliant, he's a real good guy. I want him to be a part of the group here but at his age, we talked about him playing regularly and if the opportunity had come for him to go then him and I would look at it.

"But the reaction from that conversation six or seven weeks ago has been outstanding. He's played a lot of games and I thought he was brilliant.

"If he keeps playing like that then he'll be in the team so there's no need for him to leave to get a game. I always have wanted him to stay. It's not about me pushing him out the door, he's a quality player."

The result moved Liverpool up to eighth in the Premier League standings, five points behind Arsenal, who head a four-way tie for third.
