Gareth Barry headed home in injury-time to steal all three points off a determined Royals outfit who have now lost all of their last seven Premier League matches.
When asked whether he thought the Citizens would wrestle away the win, Mancini said: "I hoped, always. It was difficult. We had lots of possession but if you don't score early it is very difficult.
"You have to be patient but if we had scored one goal in the first half it would have changed the game. You need to score quickly in these games and sometimes you take a risk to score. I think we deserved to win."
When quizzed whether he was surprised it was Gareth Barry who scored the winner, the Italian added: "Not surprised because sometimes Gareth scores and he usually scores important goals."
The result saw City close the gap at the top of the standings to just three points, with leaders Manchester United only scheduled to play Swansea on Sunday afternoon.
