Arteta: Match-winning strike

Arsenal crept past Wigan as Mikel Arteta's second-half penalty proved the difference between the two sides at the DW Stadium on Saturday.

The first half saw both teams look to attack but, despite their intent, chances were few and far between. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain went closest to breaking the deadlock.

The youngster was put in by Arteta but his powerful strike at the near post was athletically beaten away by Al Al-Habsi.

Elsewhere, Lucas Podolski fired over, while at the other end Arouna Kone dragged his shot wide with just Wojciech Szczesny to beat.

The second half didn't see much improvement but Arsenal finally broke the deadlock on the hour mark when they were awarded a penalty for Jean Beausejour's challenge on Theo Walcott.

Arteta made no mistake from the spot, sending Al-Habsi the wrong way. Arsenal sat back after the goal, allowing Wigan to create chances.

Szczesny made saves in quick succession from Maynor Figueroa and Kone. That was before David Jones drove an effort wide and James McArthur pulled his shot wide of the upright.

The win sees Arsenal climb, at least temporarily, into third spot while Wigan go into Christmas knowing they face a relegation battle in the New Year.
