The Belgium international joined Spurs for £15million in the off-season after Real Madrid lured Modric to the Spanish capital.

Dembele has been in good form since joining the north Londoners, but remains insistent that he is not filling anyone's boots.

"Before I came to Tottenham I was a big fan of Luka Modric," he told The Mirror. "For me he was one of the best in England, but I am a totally different player.

"He had different qualities and I have different qualities as well so I don't feel I have to do exactly what he did, I do my own game. I try my best to be as important as he was and that would be a great achievement."

The 25-year-old recounted how Fulham boss Martin Jol experimented with his positions last season.

"The coaches had tried me as a striker on the left and the right but I prefer this position," he explained. "I'm a player who likes to see a lot of the ball and in this position I receive a lot of the ball."
