The Blues were looking to become only the second English club to lift the trophy following Manchester United's triumph in 2008.

However, the European champions were undone by Paolo Guerrero's 68th-minute header at the Yokohama Stadium on Sunday.

Their misery was compounded late on when Gary Cahill was sent-off following an off-the-ball incident and he will now miss out on Chelsea's clash at Leeds on Wednesday.

The west Londoners travel to Elland Road for their Capital One Cup tie, with a Premier League encounter with Aston Villa soon after.

After their fourth failure to land a trophy already this season, Benitez now faces the unenviable task of psyching his players up for their domestic obligations.

"We will go back, we will have a game against Leeds and then against Aston Villa," the Blues interim boss said.

"So we carry on trying to be strong, mentally. We'll have some [disappointed] hours after the defeat. But, after that, we have to be ready."
