The hosts made a strong start to the game with both Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric going close in the opening moments and it appeared as if Los Merengues were going to have a field day.

However, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock thanks to a wonderfully placed shot from Sergio Garcia from just outside the area after half an hour, following some fine work from Joan Verdu on the break.

This seemed to spark the champions into life and after wasting a whole host of chances, they finally levelled the scores as Ronaldo fired home from the centre of the box from Sami Khedira's cross on the stroke of half-time.

Jose Mourinho's side seemed inspired by the goal and made the perfect start to the second stanza, with Fabio Coentrao putting them ahead with a well-taken shot following a scrappy corner.

Real then dominated the game but were unable to add to their lead, as Espanyol continued to push forward on the break, with the Cristian Alfonso going closest to levelling things with a long-range effort on the hour.

And they finally got their reward as Juan Albin found the net with a close-range effort two minutes from time.

The home team continued to press in desperate search of a winner but it wasn't to be and they had to settle for a solitary point.
