Paolo Guerrero scored the only goal of the game on 68 minutes at the Yokohama Stadium on Sunday as the Brazilian club claimed a deserved victory over the European champions.

Torres was gifted with a glorious chance to pull the Blues level five minutes from time, but he struck his shot straight at the goalkeeper, although the Spaniard scored a disallowed goal for off-side in stoppage-time.

Benitez felt his compatriot should have been more positive when presented with the goal-scoring opportunity, which would have taken the final to extra-time.

He said: "[You have to] try to find the positives in the situation. He was there. He had the chances. He scored the goal that was disallowed [in injury time].

"He has to take these chances in a final because it's not easy to create too many. If you have two or three, you have to score."

Benitez claimed his team lacked the necessary desire to emerge victorious and complimented Timao for the way they managed the contest.

"This is the final of the World Cup for the South American teams. You could see this from the first minute," he admitted. "Our players have some quality but, physically, some of them aren't so strong.

"You could see they have experience and, every second, they were around the referee and doing well - and wasting [time] round near the end.

"I don't say that as a negative. They were 'managing' the game quite well."
