Swansea were forced to defend doggedly for much of the first half as Tottenham dominated possession but failed to find the breakthrough.

Jermain Defoe might have found the net when he was played in by Moussa Dembele but his low shot was well blocked by Chico Flores on 13 minutes.

Kyle Walker struck a ferocious long-range effort at goal later in the half but keeper Gerhard Tremmel managed to get enough behind it to make the save.

Michu almost embarrassed Hugo Lloris on the stroke of halftime as he looked to lob the Frenchman from halfway but the curling effort went narrowly over.

After the break it was more of the same as Tottenham continued to press.

The decisive goal finally came with a quarter of an hour remaining as Kyle Walker's set piece fell for Vertonghen whose right-footed half-volley nestled in the bottom corner.

Lloris was forced to come off his line in injury time to punch away from the head of Michu. Michu was caught by the keeper and was left flat on the floor as Spurs broke through Andros Townsend, but he failed to apply the finish with the visitors appealing for play to be stopped.

Swansea have now failed to win in fifteen visits to White Hart Lane and missed the chance to go as high as fifth in the league.
