The Blues were looking to become only the second English club to lift the trophy following Manchester United's triumph in 2008.

However, they were undone by a header from Paolo Guerrero on 68 minutes at the Yokohama Stadium, and their misery was compounded late on when Gary Cahill was sent-off following an off-the-ball incident with Emerson.

Fernando Torres wasted a glorious chance to pull his team level with five minutes remaining when he fired straight at the goalkeeper.

The Spanish striker had the ball in the back of the net in stoppage-time, but the goal was correctly ruled out for off-side, while compatriot Juan Mata fired wide from an acute angle soon after.

Lampard, who captained the side on the day, concedes they should at least have taken the game to extra-time, but praised the Brazilian outfit for a disciplined performance.

"It was always going to be a tough game. They are a very good team," he told BBC2. "It is tough to come away with a bad feeling. We had enough chance to at least draw the match.

"They were very organised, I think Brazilian teams at club level can be like that. We knew what they were going to bring. It is disappointing to come all this way and not win it."

Lampard has urged his team-mates to focus their efforts on the domestic front, starting with the Capital One Cup quarter-final clash with Leeds on Wednesday.

He said: "We have to win a run of games in the league now. We've got the league, the Europa League, Capital One Cup and the FA Cup coming up. We have to move on."
