Benteke: On the mark for Villa

Aston Villa extended their unbeaten run to five Premier League matches with an unlikely 3-1 victory at Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.

It was an even more unbelievable scoreline as, for the first 25 minutes, Villa had been over-run by a Liverpool side that had come into the game amid optimistic talk that they could challenge for a top-four finish this season.

But after Christian Benteke had given the visitors the lead against the run of play, Liverpool wilted and completely ran out of ideas in the second period as Villa threatened to win by an even wider margin.

Steven Gerrard, Joe Allen and Stewart Downing all had early shots saved as Brendan Rodgers' side started superbl.

But for all their midfield possession, the Reds were once again toothless in attack as the increasingly isolated Luis Suarez, returning to the side after serving his suspension, grew more frustrated.

The visitors took the lead with their first meaningful attack just before the half-hour mark when Benteke fired a shot in off the post, although Pepe Reina should perhaps have done better.

The home fans had just about come to terms with going behind when Villa doubled their advantage five minutes before the interval - Benteke's brilliant back-heel setting up Andreas Weimann to slot home the second goal from six yards out.

Liverpool had claims for a penalty turned down when Ciaran Clark appeared to pull Daniel Agger's shirt but Benteke made it 3-0 six minutes into the second period after some woeful defending by the home side.

Gerrard headed home a late consolation goal for Liverpool but it was far too little, too late for the Reds who have slipped to 12th in the table, only two places above resurgent Villa.
