Germany's second-choice gloveman outshone incumbent and Bayern number-one Manuel Neuer at the Allianz Arena to secure a point for Gladbach.
Heynckes was accepting of the final result before the festive break, with the Bavarians still top of the Bundesliga table.
"You can see from the fact that Ter Stegen was the best player on the field that we had a glut of chances," he said.
"We were up against a very defensive side, but we played a sensational game nonetheless, especially in the second half.
"Monchengladbach did not have even one good goalscoring opportunity.
"We had at least six or eight, but ter Stegen made some fantastic saves, which is why I cannot criticise my team."
