Vidic has been sidelined since September following another round of knee surgery, but United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has since confirmed the Serbia defender will feature at the weekend.

"Nemanja is back in the squad," said the Scot. "He is a top defender and our captain."

Shinji Kagawa has returned to training with the first-team again after a two-month lay-off, although Saturday's clash comes too soon for the attacking midfielder.

Jonny Evans has also been ruled out for the table-topping Red Devils due to a hamstring injury suffered in Sunday's derby win at Manchester City.

Martin O'Neill's Black Cats recorded a morale-boosting 3-0 victory over Reading at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday evening.

The midweek win ended a run of four matches without a win for the Wearsiders and left them 15th in the Premier League standings.

O'Neill, though, could be forced into two changes for Saturday's trip with Adam Johnson (dead leg) and Danny Rose (ankle) both having picked up knocks against the Royals.

Steven Fletcher's niggling ankle problem will also be assessed once again.
