The Magpies have struggled of late and have won just once in their last five matches, losing the other four.

They now sit in 14th place on the table with 17 points, just two points clear of the relegation zone.

The Tynesiders will be without Steven Taylor and Yohan Cabaye, who remain sidelined but could welcome back Gabriel Obertan.

Boss Alan Pardew will be sweating over the fitness of Hatem Ben-Arfa after he suffered an injury setback in Monday's defeat at Fulham.

Meanwhile, City head into the match off Sunday's derby defeat to Manchester United and need to make up a six-point deficit to the league leaders.

They are, however, currently on a 10-match unbeaten run away from home and have lost just the one match all season.

Roberto Mancini's side will likely have to make do without Gareth Barry, who faces a one-match ban for abusing the match official during last weekend's clash.

Vincent Kompany is also set to miss out on the trip to the North East as the defender has missed training after picking up a knock against the Red Devils.
