After Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand was left bleeding after being struck with a coin by a City supporter in last week's derby, the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) has called for netting to be installed in stadiums.
But Kompany wants another solution in order to ensure the players' safety.
"I hope actions will be taken but let's not forget where football has come from and how far it has come," he told Football Focus.
"It is never a good thing to happen, not just for Manchester City or Manchester United, but for football.
"I would definitely say we need action on prevention but keep treating fans as human beings and not animals that have to be behind cages."
