The Manchester United defender took to Twitter after UEFA announced the sanctions against Serbia, their players and two coaches.

Three Lions youngsters Thomas Ince and Steven Caulker were also banned, and Ferdinand was highly critical of the European governing body's handling of the situation.

"UEFA not serious at all on racism. Fines do not work at all. They have zero impact on federations/clubs/fans/players," he tweeted.

"UEFA need to talk to this generation... they don't seem to be up to date on this issue. Harsh punishments needed as a deterrent #simple."

In the aftermath of the U21 match at the Mladost Stadium in Krusevac on October 16, FA general secretary Alex Horne confirmed that England would consider boycotting matches against Serbia because of the "racial abuse, violence and threatening behaviour" in the country.
