It was the visitors who enjoyed the better of the opening moments, with Grant Leadbitter finding himself in the Swansea box in the first minute, but his effort did little to trouble Gerhard Tremmel.

This seemed to spark the hosts into life and they started to get on top, but repeatedly failed to produce the final ball, as the teams cancelled each other out for the remainder of what was a disappointing half of football.

The game carried on in very much the same vein in the second stanza, with both sides continuing to show plenty of endeavour, but neither could find that extra bit of quality at the all important moment.

The way the match was panning out, it seemed almost inevitable that it would end up going to extra time, but it wasn't to be as the Swans took the lead after Seb Hines headed into his own net on 81 minutes, following a prolonged period of pressure.

The goal meant Boro needed something special and Ishmael Miller came closest with a long range shot but his effort was easily saved by Tremmel and Swansea easily held on to book their place in the last four.
