The Magpies have slumped to 14th place in the Premier League table, just two points clear of the relegation zone, after suffering defeat to Fulham in Monday night's clash.

With a tough run of festive fixtures coming up, including trips to Manchester United and Arsenal, Pardew has called on the Toon to beat holders City and struggling QPR on Tyneside.

"We have to keep an eye on where we are," he told ESPN. "It is difficult to get points at the minute. We're a side that on its day can beat anybody. We look more like a team.

"In the last three games the level has improved but unfortunately we need to get results.

"We've got the Man City and QPR games - they loom large. There's no reason why we can't win both of those.

"We've got to go and attack Man City. If we play at that level in the second half at Fulham, we've got a chance."

The former Southampton boss claimed that he is unlikely to venture into the transfer market this January as he is content with his current squad.

"Until such time, that is the team" he said. "I thought it looked a good team at Fulham. We were just a bit unfortunate not to get anything from the game.

"I don't think so, I think that's the group between now and mid-January, when maybe Steven [Taylor] and Cabaye will come back to us."
