The Scotland international has been struggling with the problem for a few weeks, which he worsened in the 3-0 defeat at Newcastle last Monday.
Caldwell sat out Saturday's 2-2 draw against QPR through suspension, although he would have missed the game anyway as a result of his injury.
The 30-year-old centre-back will be sidelined for another two weeks at least, although Martinez revealed he is making steady progress in his recovery.
"Caldwell is still in week one of a three-week recovery period," the Spanish tactician told Latics Player.
"He missed the game against Reading (on November 24) as he was carrying a bit of a hamstring problem and that was accentuated in the Newcastle game.
"It will be between two or three weeks but he has recovered well and in the last couple of days he has been progressing. He won't be ready for Norwich (on Saturday) but he won't be far away."
