The Gunners bounced back from a run of four matches without victory with a 2-0 result against West Brom in the Premier League on Saturday.
However, those three points still left the north London outfit 15 points behind off the summit in seventh.
Manchester United went six points clear of second-placed Manchester City on Sunday, Robin van Persie's injury-time free-kick having settled the Manchester derby.
Wenger admits the result was not the one he would have been hoping for, but believes with a good run of consistency, his side can never be counted out of the reckoning.
"The Manchester derby was of a very good level and the draw would maybe have been the fair result," the Frenchman told Arsenal Player.
"Manchester City came back - they started the game very strongly - but Man United have shown they are clinical up front.
"The rest of the weekend was quite interesting. It shows that if you're consistent, you will be there at the end of the season. From now on it is important for us to be consistent.
"The gap [to the top] is big, but not big enough to think it's done."
