The 21-year-old came off the field of play in the first half against Sunderland on Saturday after picking up the injury, with the former Barcelona playmaker requiring an operation.
The news saw the Spaniard ruled out of the Club World Cup, which takes place in Japan, while his Premier League season is also over.
A statement on the Blues' website read: "Oriol Romeu underwent anterior cruciate reconstruction surgery and medial meniscus repair yesterday (Monday). He is expected to be out for six months."
The west London outfit have since brought in 19-year-old George Saville as Romeu's replacement for Club World Cup duty.
