The Black Cats are on a three-match winless run, Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Chelsea leaving Martin O'Neill's men in 18th place on the Premier League table.

Meanwhile, the Royals sit one place behind the Wearsiders, but with only nine points from 15 matches, they trail the north-east outfit by four heading into the midweek clash.

Brian McDermott's side also make the trip on the back of a 1-0 defeat at Southampton over the weekend, and more than likely without the services of Sean Morrison.

The defender suffered an ankle injury against the Saints and is expected to miss out, while striker Pavel Pogrebnyak will also stay behind with a knock.

Alex McCarthy (shoulder), Jimmy Kebe (groin) and Jem Karacan (knee) are all still on the recovery table, along with Chris Gunter (hamstring).

For the Black Cats, striker Steven Fletcher could make his return from injury after having failed a late fitness against the Blues.

Lee Cattermole remains sidelined with a long-term knee injury.
