Aston Villa were arguably the better side in the first half but were unable to trouble Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic.

Striker Christian Benteke unleashed what looked like a goalbound shot but England defender Ryan Shawcross put his body on the line to block the ball.

That was before midfielder Barry Bannan fizzed an effort wide for the home side.

However, Stoke - who created nothing before the break - stayed strong at the back as Villa were unable to find a way through.

The action didn't improve in the second 45 minutes. Benteke again saw an effort blocked, this time by Geoff Cameron who slid in to halt the Villa man's shot, while late on substitute Stephen Ireland's drive flew over the crossbar.

At the other end, Jonathan Walters enjoyed Stoke's best chance, but his snapshot flew wide of Brad Guzan's upright, while even the introduction of the out-of-favour £24million man, Darren Bent, could not edge it Villa's way.

The Potters were reduced to 10 men in injury time when Shotton was shown a second yellow card for a challenge on Fabian Delph but it finished goalless.
