Benitez: Staying positive

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez has declared that his team are still within touching distance of the Premier League and must build towards the second half of the season.

His comments come in the wake of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's claims that the chase for the title was already a two-horse race between his side and champions Manchester City, who clash at the Eithad Stadium on Sunday.

The Blues are third in the standings and 10 points behind leaders United and face Sunderland on Saturday afternoon to stay in touch.

And Benitez is looking for his first league win as Blues boss to break the unwanted record of the worst start by a Chelsea manager under Roman Abravomich's ownership.

"I'm not worried about the distance," said the Spaniard. "It's important we win so we are close, but all we can do is think about one game at a time.

"We have to improve the team and be mentally strong enough to compete in the second part of the league.

"At Valencia we were eight points behind in January. If we have to do the same here, we will do it. But we have to show the same character we have.

"The main thing is about the evolution of our team. If we're stronger, we'll be able to win games in a row. We have to find form."
