Carroll is expected to be sidelined for up to two months with a knee injury although he would have been ineligible to face Liverpool as a result of the terms of his loan agreement.

Benayoun, who had to sit out of the 3-1 win over Chelsea for the same reason, returns to the Hammers side for this mammoth clash.

Allardyce's side, who currently occupy eighth place with 22 points from 15 games, have impressed in their first season back in the top-flight.

They held Manchester City to a goalless draw in November while narrowly losing 1-0 to Manchester United, but at the same time losing games they would have expected to win, highlighting their inconsistency.

Injuries to Ricardo Vaz Te (shoulder), Alou Diarra (thigh) and Jack Collison (knee) have not helped the former Bolton and Newcastle boss, with all three ruled out of contention this weekend.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, meanwhile, is slowly developing his new side into a formidable unit, and they come into this game on the back of a 1-0 away win over Udinese in the Europa League, having defeated Southampton last weekend.

He won't be able to call on the services of Luis Suarez, though, with the striker suspended for the trip to Upton Park after picking up five bookings, with midfielder Jonjo Shelvey expected to deputise in his absence.

Captain Steven Gerrard (ill) as well as Daniel Agger and Lucas Leiva, who were rested for the mid-week tie, are expected to return this weekend.
