The Premier League's top-two lock horns at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in the first Manchester derby of the new domestic campaign.
Both clubs head into the tie on the back of Champions League defeats, although United still went through as winners of their group while City's European campaign came to an end at the group stages for the second successive season.
However, Ferguson admits the Red Devils have plenty of defensive frailties to work on, with the side having conceded three goals in the first-half against Reading last weekend.
"If we win it will be one of our best-ever results," Ferguson told MUTV.
"They are a really good, powerful team with massive players.
"It won't be easy and if we defend like we did at Reading we'll be in trouble.
"The important thing for us is to take lessons from the mistakes we're making and do something about it. We need to find a solution."
