The Honduras international, who can operate in midfield or defence, will travel to England in a fortnight to finalise a two-and-a-half year deal at the DW Stadium.
Espinoza had attracted interest from other clubs in England, Spain and Portugal, but settled on a move to the Latics after being assured by manager Roberto Martinez that he will play a "key" role for the club.
The 26-year-old will link up with compatriot Maynor Figueroa in Lancashire when his contract with the Major Soccer League outfit runs out at the end of the year.
Espinoza told goal.com: "The idea is to be in England in two weeks, then we will make the move official once my MLS contract expires on December 31.
"So I won't be able to work with the team this year but at least I will have time to settle myself in the area.
"My contract is for two-and-a-half years. I'm glad for the stability of the contract. I'm signed with Wigan but my agent told me that teams in England, Spain, Portugal were also interested."
