The Galacticos cruised through the first-half of Tuesday's Champions League encounter and could have been ahead inside 10 minutes as Karim Benzema saw a goal ruled out for off-side before Fabio Coentrao's powerful shot came back off the post.

Cristiano Ronaldo put the home side ahead on 13 minutes with an emphatic finish after good work by Luka Modric and Benzema, who forced a fine save out of Kenneth Vermeer moments later.

Madrid doubled their lead before the half hour mark. Modric again instrumental in the build-up as his pass over the Ajax defence found Callejon to control well before striking a shot off the post and in.

Kaka added a third - and the best goal of the game - for Madrid four minutes into the second-half as his curling left-footed shot found the top corner from 20-yards.

Ajax pulled a goal back on the 59th minute after poor goalkeeping by Adan allowed Derk Boerrigter to side-foot into an empty net and the game became more open from then on.

Danny Hoesen should have reduced Madrid's lead to just one goal less than ten minutes later but the 21-year-old blazed over from a one-on-one opportunity with Adan.

Callejon put the final nail in the coffin after 88 minutes with a close range header, his second of the game, and Alvaro Morata almost scored a fifth in injury time.

History was made in the second-half when 17-year-old Jose Rodriguez became Real Madrid's youngest ever player to play in the Champions League as a second-half substitution for Kaka, but the youngster failed to make an impact on the tie.

Manchester City's defeat to Borussia Dortmund means Ajax qualify for the last 32 of the Europa League. Real Madrid now await the draw on December 20 to find out their opponent for the Champions League Round of 16.
