The Serbia international has missed much of the first half of the new season due to knee problems and underwent surgery in September.
He is now in contention to make his United comeback against CFR Cluj in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson will be keen to give the 31-year-old centre-back a run-out in their final Group H clash in the hope that he could feature in the Manchester derby this weekend.
Ferguson's side head into the crucial festive period sitting top of the pile in the Premier League, and he believes United can maintain their charge as long as their defenders stay injury-free.
"We've managed Rio Ferdinand very well," the Scot told Inside United. "Rio is doing a lot of work throughout the week to get himself ready for games.
"If we can keep Chris Smalling and Phil Jones fit along with Rio and Jonny Evans - we'll see how Nemanja Vidic gets on - we'll have a far better chance."
