The England international, who is on a season-long loan from Liverpool, was in Ireland's capital for the Hammers' Christmas party following their 3-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday.
A Garda press office spokesperson confirmed that officers at the city's Pearse Street station are investigating an incident in which a photographer is claimed to have been assailed in the main shopping district of Grafton Street in the early hours on Monday morning.
Carroll has denied any transgression after he and his Irons team-mates were interviewed about the reported assault, although no arrests have been made.
The 23-year-old has endured a frustrating spell at Upton Park due to injuries.
He is expected to be out of action until after the New Year after sustaining knee ligament damage against Manchester United last week having just returned from a hamstring problem which had sidelined him for several weeks.
