The Premier League title holders have disappointed in Europe this season and now find themselves bottom of Group D needing a better result than Ajax in order to qualify for the Europa League.

Ahead of the vital clash against Borussia Dortmund in Germany, Mancini shrugged off claims that the Citizens should feel embarrassed about exiting the competition so early.

"Embarrassment for what I don't know," the Italian said at his pre-match press conference. "We are disappointed as we wanted to go to the second stage this year.

"I think in football we need to learn that if there are other teams that play better than you and deserve to go through then you accept this.

"We did not play well, Borussia and Real Madrid played better than us. We will try again next year."
