The 30-year-old was central to the Three Lions' Euro 2012 campaign, but has found himself out of favour at the Etihad Stadium this season as City boss Roberto Mancini has preferred young Serbian Matija Nastasic.
Lescott is determined to regain his starting berth for the Premier League champions, but knows he has to do it soon in order to remain in the frame for the national team.
"It's important I stay fit and get back in the team," the former Everton man told The Guardian.
"It's nice to have played for England but I need to force my way back into our side first to have a chance of staking a claim for my country.
"It'll be hard to break back regularly with Matija playing so well."
