The 23-year-old sustained the injury after just 35 minutes of Bayern's 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday evening.

After undergoing a scan, the club's medical staff confirmed the worst - that the Germany international will undergo surgery after which he will be sidelined for half a year.

"It is very bitter," said Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes after the stalemate in Munich.

"The players were very shocked. He was only just getting back into a rhythm. This is very bitter for the lad."

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added on the club's official website: "He said that he just got stuck in the grass. It just went snap immediately."

Badstuber had only recently returned from torn muscle fibres, playing 12 league games this season before suffering his latest setback.
