The Red Devils twice had to come from behind after initially taking an early lead, but Robin van Persie's 34th minute strike proved the difference at the Madejski Stadium as Sir Alex Ferguson's men won 4-3.

The result took United three points clear at the top of the standings, while the Royals finished the day still in the relegation zone with nine points from their opening 14 Premier League matches.

Hal Robson-Kanu had opened the scoring after just eight minutes as he fired home following a poor defensive header from Johnny Evans.

Five minutes later and Ferguson's men were back on level terms as Anderson rifled home, although Adam Federici would have felt he should have done better after fumbling the ball into the back of his net.

With 13 minutes gone the visitors took the lead for the first time as Jay Tabb conceded a penalty, with Wayne Rooney stepping up to slot home from the spot.

Adam Le Fondre then headed Reading back on level terms, while four minutes later Sean Morrison followed in kind with his own header.

However, Rooney grabbed his second on the half-hour mark after slotting home following some brilliant build-up play from Patrice Evra, before playing the pass through for prolific Dutchman Van Persie to smartly slot home the winner.

The second-half failed to come even close to the opening 45 minutes in terms of goals, with neither side able to find a way through.

Le Fondre had come close shortly after the restart with a speculative effort, while Chris Smalling's lack of composure prevented him from slotting home United's fifth, although they were able to hold out for the win.
