The first half was a rather poor affair, with both sides struggling to keep hold of the ball, as well as struggling to create any chances that forced either keeper to make a save.

The closest either side came to breaking the deadlock was a header from Kenwyne Jones, from a Geoff Cameron cross, which shaved the post, with Boaz Myhill beaten.

The second half was slightly better, especially when Romelu Lukaku and Peter Odemwingie came on for the Baggies, with the Nigerian causing problems down the wing.

Stoke won 15 minutes from time, when Jonas Olsson needlessly gave the ball away and Michael Kightly crossed for fellow substitute Whitehead to steer home.

West Brom rarely threatened Asmir Begovic's goal, though he was forced into a decent save a few minutes from the end, after Shane Long fired in a shot, but the Baggies succumbed to their second defeat in a row, after previously being on a decent run which had propelled them into third place in the table.
