The Redknapp era began with a goalless draw at Sunderland in midweek but hopes were high of a first win of the campaign in the new boss' first game at Loftus Road.

Villa earned themselves three huge points with a narrow win over fellow strugglers Reading on Tuesday night and Paul Lambert will have been delighted again with his side on Saturday.

Australian midfielder Brett Holman scored his first ever Premier League goal to give the visitors the lead inside eight minutes with a 25-yard drive that stand-in keeper Robert Green couldn't get down quickly enough to stop.

However, the lead last just ten minutes as Jamie Mackie rose unopposed to meet a dangerous cross from Jose Bosingwa and head beyond Brad Guzan from six yards.

Guzan could do nothing about Mackie's leveller but he was in excellent form throughout and denied the Scottish striker soon afterwards and then tipped Shaun Wright-Phillips' effort onto the base of the post.

In the second half it was all QPR as they laid siege to the Villa goal but Guzan continued to stand firm and even when Clint Hill did beat the American keeper his header crashed back off the underside of the bar and away.

Frustration in the end for QPR but definitely signs of improvement for the hosts while Paul Lambert will be delighted with the way his young side held on despite being under unrelenting pressure.
