Rooney: Been a little off-colour

Sir Alex Ferguson is happy to see Wayne Rooney assisting his Manchester United team-mates' goals, but would prefer the striker chips in with more of his own.

Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez have been in prolific form in front of goal this season, the United strike duo having struck 12 and nine times respectively.

Rooney, however, has only managed to find the back of the net three times, although the England hitman has had a rather staggered start to the campaign.

Ferguson is grateful for whatever contribution Rooney can make to United's cause, but is eager for the 27-year old to don his goalscoring boots more often in future.

"Wayne is going through a period like all strikers do, he is not scoring," the Scot said.

"He has missed bits of games and been off with tonsillitis, and Wayne is the type of player who can't miss games because of the frame he has got."

As for Rooney's new position in attack, Ferguson added: "I am happy with that part of his game.

"If he can contribute to the team's success, fine. But we would rather he scored more obviously."
