The England international, who joined the Hammers on a season-long loan deal at the beginning of the campaign, picked up the injury during the midweek defeat to Manchester United.
The £35million-rated forward had only just returned from several weeks in the casualty ward with a hamstring strain, and he is now only expected to return in the new year.
"It is pretty severe - lateral ligament, I think," Allardyce told Sky Sports.
"We did not expect it to be quite as severe as it was but it looks like maybe six to eight weeks. So that is a bit of a blow for us and Andy.
"But we must soldier on. There is not a lot we can do about these trauma injuries."
