Sir Alex Ferguson is expecting another tense battle for the Premier League crown as Manchester giants United and City continue to go neck-and-neck in the title race.

Robin van Persie's goal after just 32 seconds handed the Red Devils a 1-0 win over West Ham on Wednesday, while Roberto Mancini's City fired two unanswered goals past Wigan.

Those results kept United one point above their bitter rivals at the top of the standings, while third-placed Chelsea now find themselves six points behind second.

Last season's race for league glory went down to the final day, where an injury-time strike from Sergio Aguero handed the Citizens the title on goal difference.

And United boss Ferguson is expecting a similar story this term, saying: "We got a great start (against West Ham). You hope to go on from a start like that and some of our football was very good but we never quite finished them off.

"We have played with the diamond quite a few times this season and done very well so I don't think that is an excuse.

"But we have got the three points and are still ahead in the league.

"With Chelsea drawing it draws us away from them a little bit further.

"But of course, (Manchester) City are on our tails so it is going to be a long season."
