Wenger: Takes point and moves on

Arsene Wenger said he was disappointed with the goal Arsenal conceded in the 1-1 draw against Everton on Wednesday, but believes a share of the spoils was probably a fair outcome.

The Gunners had taken the lead just 52 seconds into the Goodison Park affair through Theo Walcott, although some lacklustre defending from the visitors allowed Marouane Fellaini to stroke home the equaliser before half-time.

The Toffees were also denied what appeared to be a legitimate penalty after former Everton ace Mikel Arteta brought down Steven Pienaar inside the area, but the referee waved away the frantic appeals.

Speaking after the tie, Wenger told his club's official website: "Overall, if I look back at the game, it was one of big physical intensity. We had a good start and after that I felt Everton came back.

"Their direct game was always a threat with Fellaini. We have regrets on the goal we conceded but overall, I believe that 1-1 is a fair result.

"It's a good point here and it was a game of remarkable intensity. We needed to show great spirit today to get a point because they were up for it.

"I can only say I'm pleased with the effort we have put in [during] the game."

The midweek tie followed on from a packed fixture list for the north London giants, and Wenger is hopeful his side will be fresh in time for this weekend's clash at home against Swansea.

The Frenchman added: "Last week, we played [in the] Champions League [on] Wednesday night, [then] Saturday at Villa [and] today at Everton. We have to give a lot and we have some players who play on the edge and hopefully will recover for Saturday."
