Pochettino, who joined the club in January 2009, led them to an 11th-placed finish in the 2009/2010 season when relegation was a real possibility, before eighth and 14th-placed finishes in the past two campaigns.

But struggles in La Liga this term forced Periquitos to make changes - they sank to the bottom of the standings following their 2-0 defeat to Getafe on the weekend and have recorded just two wins from 13 games.

Former Mexico and Atletico Madrid boss Aguirre will be officially unveiled at a press conference on Thursday before overseeing first match in charge away to fellow strugglers Granada on Sunday.

Espanyol B coach Raul Longhi will take charge of the team for their Copa del Rey clash on Wednesday where they need to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Javier Aguirre and Espanyol have reached an agreement for the Mexican to be the coach of the club until the end of the season.

"Aguirre arrives accompanied by Alfredo Tena as assistant coach and Juan Iribarren as physio, who have accompanied him on all his past experiences as a coach."

Sporting director Ramon Planes was also relieved of his duties after sections of the home support booed him and Pochettino at the weekend.
