Sir Alex Ferguson may have given Andy Carroll the motivation he needs ahead of West Ham's clash with Manchester United on Wednesday evening.

The on-loan Liverpool striker has netted just once since joining the Hammers at the end of August, a consolation goal in the 3-1 loss to Tottenham last week.

But when asked about the burly England international, who cost the Reds £35million from Newcastle in January 2011, Ferguson revealed he would never had spent so much on a player in the mold of Carroll.

The Scot told the club's official website: "I'd certainly not sign that kind of player for that kind of money.

"He has only played something like a dozen games for Newcastle and then he had to deal with a £35million transfer to a club like Liverpool. That's quite a big jump.

"We've gambled on young players in the past, maybe a couple of million or whatever, but when you get that level you really have to do a bit more homework and see how he is in his second season maybe."

Ferguson did, however, admit that he expects Carroll to give his defenders a hard time.

United top the Premier League standings with 30 points from 13 games, some 11 better than the eighth-placed Irons, have but conceded the first goal nine times in 13 league matches.

Fergie added: "He's still not had a lot of games but he is a big lad, aggressive and a great header of the ball. He'll be a handful for our defenders."
